Álvaro Ramos

Costa Rican. He is an economics graduate from the University of Costa Rica and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Administrative Computing from Costa Rica’s State University for Distance Leaning (UNED) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California Berkeley.

Career in Government:

  • Alvaro is the current Superintendent of Pensions. He worked as a research professional for Costa Rica’s Central Bank (2014-2015). Previously, he served as Vice-Minister of Finance (2012-2014) and was Director General of the Ministry of Finance from 2011-2012.
  • His research has focused on labor economics, economic development and demographics.
  • His article “The impact of changing family structures on the income distribution among Costa Rican women 1993-2009” was published in the Journal of Feminist Economics in 2013.

He has taught different courses at the University of Costa Rica and the University of California Berkeley, including Microeconomic Theory, Labor Economics and International Trade, among others.

He has been the recipient of several academic excellence awards, such as the Costa Rican Ministry of Education’s Student Excellence Award for having obtained the highest baccalaureate exam score.
